What Is Tendinopathy?

Most long-standing tendon pain is better described as tendinopathy—a condition in which the tendon has lost some of its normal structure and ability to tolerate load. Rather than functioning like a healthy, spring-like tissue, the tendon becomes less efficient at storing and transferring force.

What's the difference between tendinitis and tendinopathy?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they're not exactly the same. Tendinitis implies inflammation is the primary problem, while most persistent tendon pain is better described as tendinopathy, where the tendon has lost some of its ability to tolerate load. That's why modern rehabilitation focuses on rebuilding tendon capacity rather than simply reducing inflammation.

Should I completely rest my tendon?
